Which is the most important feature of a vacuum cleaner?
I like to do some small market studies from time to time. One of them was done in my latest giveaway. I wanted to test how people feel about the importance of several vacuum cleaner features, such as brand, suction power, filters, capacity, price, warranty and so on. People had to sort these options in the order of their importance. What was left for me was to inspect these results and put them into a logical context. But why going through all this trouble? You see, buying a vacuum cleaner seems like such a straightforward job. However, with so many models in the market, it’s easy to overspend on an under-performing machine. Adding to the … [Read more...]
Vacuum cleaners F.A.Q.
Here are some of the most common questions asked by the visitors of this blog: How does a vacuum cleaner work? Before you can understand how an everyday vacuum cleaner works, it’s important to learn a few basic concepts. There is a reason why vacuum cleaners have the word 'vacuum' in them. When air gets drawn out from a space it creates a low-pressure system or a partial vacuum. When that happens, air from the outside tries to rush into and fill that low-pressure space. We see it all the time. If you suck out the air from a disposable plastic bottle, the walls of the bottle crumble inward. That’s just the air from the atmosphere … [Read more...]
Privacy and robot vacuum cleaners
The newer generation of Roomba models made by iRobot (more specifically, the 960 and the 980) work by creating digital floor maps of their customers' home. This is to navigate around obstacles efficiently and to ensure every corner of the home is cleaned properly. iRobot CEO, Collin Angle recently told Reuters about their intent to share (corrected from the word sell) this floor map data to deliver "a personalized smart home experience". Now what the hell is that, one may rightfully ask? According to Collins, iRobot is planning to draft a deal with Amazon, Apple, or Google to share for free the mapped information. This data will likely give … [Read more...]

Ultimate Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away series Comparison Chart
During last couple of weeks, I think hundreds of people asked me about the differences between the latest Shark Rotator models. They are called the Powered Lift-Away series, and because there are around 15 different models, people tend to get confused. Thus I've spent my weekend building a chart which contains all there is to know about the following models: NV650, NV650W, NV651, NV652, NV680, NV681, NV682, NV683, NV750W, NV751, NV752, NV753, NV755, NV760 and UV795. The NV650W and the NV652 were basically upgraded to the NV750W and respectively NV752 due to some minor wand problems. Here's the chart: What you need to know is that all … [Read more...]

How you will clean your home 20 years from now
Although we’ve been developing, technologically speaking, at unseen rates throughout humanity’s history, there’s still a lot of room for improvements. It could take a few decades to radically change consumers’ most used appliances, but some ideas are already here. More specifically, if you though vacuuming technologies are already at their highest level, you’re very wrong. Forget the common upright lines. Compared to what’s following 10 years from now, even Dyson’s new 360 Eye robot seems obsolete. Here is a peak into the future of vacuum cleaners, as seen by some highly talented designers and by some financial potent companies that activate … [Read more...]
