Spring is that time of the year when every one of us wants to open wide the windows and enjoy the sun from the comfort that our clean and flowery-scented home provides. Starting the process
Make a checklist
Having a plan is never a bad plan! Write down what you don’t want to forget and point out some activities that you are doing only once a year, so that you make sure you don’t leave anything undone! There are bunch of checklists on the Internet (check out my favorite – Wunderlist), but I also think that making your own personalized checklist is the real deal! So, sit down the night before the cleaning and just be rational. Don’t skip things and don’t add unnecessary stuff too. If something is clean, don’t overdo it. Keep it simple and yet effective.
Preparation is key!
Everyone has their cleaning gear and you want to make sure you are not missing something out. Check on your cleaning inventory and you should repair something if it’s broken, buy what had finished, or buy some of the new stuff that I recommend in this post. This is how you’ll be sure that the cleaning process is not going to be interrupted by anything. Now you may begin reading the tips on the actual cleaning!
Where to begin?
My mother always used to say that the first thing you want to do when starting with your spring cleaning is to make a mess! The whole winter you kept everything intact and now is the time when you move around everything and start from a scratch. Push the sofa aside, throw every used sheet on the floor, put on the gloves and let the fun begin! Well, you might want to skip the sheet part, but this way you will feel the urge to start the cleaning with full steam ahead!
Get the ladder and start “conquering” the high-positioned shelves and the top of the cupboards!
Many of us want to get around those out-of-reach places and parts of the furniture, when it comes to cleaning, because it seems like a big problem. However, if you pay your attention to them, at least once a year, this shouldn’t bother you so much. Take your time to move all the unnecessary things that you keep up there. Get rid of everything that you don’t need or put it in a box and keep it out of dust in the garage. Oh, and don’t forget to take down the spider-webs from the corners of the room, while you are still up there, because I assure you, Spidey is not born that way!
Clean the chandeliers to shine brighter
During spring cleaning, one thing you mustn’t forget is to clean the chandeliers and all the wall lamps. Also, if you have a ceiling fan you should take care of it too! They are pretty dusty and rarely cleaned. You could use a steam cleaner or a spray especially made for delicate chandeliers, like the Hagerty Chandelier Cleaner. Just spray and let the dirt to drip dry! It is the easiest way out and you don’t want to spend a lot of time carefully cleaning every tiny crystal piece of it! Unless you do, then you should prepare for a long cleaning season! As for the fans, latest cordless cleaners such as the Shark IonFlex or the Dyson V10 work like a charm.
Dust away the roller blinds!
Do you remember the last time you cleaned those roller blinds from the dust and the dirt? No? Then now is the right moment to get it done. You could use a steam cleaner if you want to stay away from chemicals and be green this spring! Next thing you want to refresh are the curtains. You could put them in the washing machine, if the fabric is not very delicate, or you could leave them to the curtain cleaning experts for dry cleaning. However, if you think that they are still fresh, you could just shake them or use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the dust until the next big cleaning time!
Time to clean those windows!
This used to be my personal favorite cleaning activity and I can’t understand why people complain so much! It’s a win-win situation. The spring sun is pouring its warm rays on you, while you strengthen those arm and shoulder muscles and in the end, you enjoy the crystal-clear reflection you made with your magical skills! It makes so much sense, doesn’t it? Okay, not everyone is so cheerful when it comes to windows cleaning. If you are one of them, I recommend a good window cleaning robot! A window cleaning robot will take care of your windows instead of you. And hey, don’t forget to clean the window borders! They make a great place for a dirt gathering!
Get rid of the dust chaos on your bookshelves!
When bookshelves would be used exclusively for books, then their cleaning would be an easy task that you would take care of in a minute. However, most of the times they are covered with so many unnecessary little things that we rarely clean the bare shelf. It would save you a lot of time if you put everything in a box, shine that dusty piece of wood and place your books on their rightful place. Save the box for later on, when you can decide what will come back to the shelf and what will stay put till some other time. Awesome cleaning product for wood is the Method Squirt + Mop. You should give it a try!
Unpleasant surprise behind the kitchen elements
Are you admiring your shining kitchen? Do you really believe it’s clean? Check the situation behind the curtains, for example, behind the fridge! Oops! Not so shiny after all! All the dust that has collected over there, with random food pieces that look so gross… Get down on your knees and make them vanish! Don’t forget the gloves and the super cool Skura Style sponges! They are the newest “tech” when it comes to sponges and I totally recommend trying them out!
Thoroughly, inside out cleaning of your kitchen appliances
Spring cleaning is great opportunity to clean your tech-stuff, like the fridge, the oven, the dish-washing machine and so on. Just, be careful when cleaning the fridge or the freezer! Keep your food in a big box filled with ice so that it doesn’t get spoiled. A great homemade trick to get rid of the unpleasant smells is to sip vinegar in the water and scrub those bacteria! Easy-peasy and also pretty cheap, don’t you think? If, however, you don’t need to save some money and want to be extra sure that you are disinfecting, get yourself a disinfecting system, such as the Force of Nature. Right after you finish cleaning the fridge it’s time to put back all the food you keep in it. Now is a good time to organize the shelves and make give your fridge that “Insta” look! The vinegar trick works for the dishwasher too! All you need to do is put one small cup of vinegar in the dishwasher and turn it on. This is one of easiest ways to get rid of the limescale!
Bathrooms have dust too!
Take it from the top! Start from the shower and I don’t mean just polishing it on the outside. Make sure you go deep the shower-head nozzle! Next step is to change the old shower curtain, or keep it for a little while and put it in the washing machine one last time! Now, it’s a show time! Spray the tiles with a tile cleaner and let the hot water from the shower make a steamy room. You would want to miss that out, so you better leave the bathroom for half an hour and after that, you only need a clean cloth to wipe down everything. Toilets are everybody’s nightmare. But this doesn’t have to be your story. Get yourself an electric pressure washer and say goodbye to all the buildup and bacteria. Or, if you don’t want to spend your money on that, you could pour a cup of baking soda into the toilet. After a while, put on your gloves, get a good scrubbing brush and get it done. In the end, all you need is a good old flush!
Take good care of your bed!
The winter was long and cold, so you felt most comfortable in your bed, your favorite mattress and under the thermal sheets. This resulted in creating a nice, sweaty home for all those gross bed-bugs! Get a stiff brush and scrub the mattress really good. After that, use your vacuum cleaner and collect everything that came up on the surface. This way you know you did your best to get rid of all the microscopic organisms that sleep with you! Or use the Raycop RS2 and do everythings much easier.
Keep your floor and carpets clean!
After you finish dusting the furniture it’s time to get down and finish what you began. You don’t want to do the work twice, so make sure you start the spring cleaning from the ceiling and end with the floor. A couple of very good products on the market are the steam floor mops from Shark. My favorite is the Genius Steam mop! You could leave the carpet in the hands of a professional, or you can do it yourself. A vacuuming the carpet is an ordinary chore, so, make sure you give your carpet the treatment it deserves! For instance, you can get a HEPA vacuum, that makes the cleaning more in-depth! Or, if you have pets, a great game-changer is the Miele C3 Cat & Dog. It’s a real power-horse! Read my guide on the best vacuum cleaners for carpet in 2018 to find out everything on this subject. Don’t forget the outdoor “welcoming” carpet! We often forget about it!
Dust is in the air!
You have to make sure you live in a clean environment and this includes the air too! Clean and healthy air is one of the priorities that you can afford. You could get an air purifier or work on those vents and filters and get yourself some quality air. Clean air is a major factor in your overall health! You don’t have to be suffering from asthma to start taking your air seriously. Mold is also something you don’t want in your home, so make sure you don’t have high humidity over your place. Use a dehumidifier and don’t forget to clean it regularly.
Finishing things and moving outside your home
Gardens are part of your home!
Not a really conventional cleaning tip, but I think that the cleaning of the house should follow after the cleaning of the garden. It’s getting warm and this means you will spend more time in your garden. So why not include the garden while spring cleaning? I suggest you start by cleaning the branches and everything that gets on your way! After that you need to nurture your garden with some good fertilizer. Then it’s time to take the metal rake and clean all the dead growth. Replant your lawn and that’s about it! If you have a vegetable or fruit garden, this is your moment to shine! Plant everything you will need for those summer salads and be proud of yourself!
Don’t forget your garage!
I know you got tired of reading only, but don’t give up! Make time for your garage. Grab the broom and take down all the cobweb! Put everything in the middle, or outside the garage and take care of the floor. Now comes the hard part. Organizing the garage. Try to keep only the stuff that you really need. Don’t keep something that might, somehow magically, get in handy in the future. It never does! It will only collect dust and crowd the place. Once you finish cleaning and organizing the garage you can consider the spring cleaning completely done.
A good spring cleaning can make you feel the real miracle of this new year. It nourishes not only the house but also your soul. It exhausts you and fills you with energy at the same time! That is why I suggest you make it a mandatory activity every spring! If you want to spend some quality time at home, I don’t see how skipping the spring clean is going to help you with that. Having fun and playing games with your family and friends are nothing without a good health. A clean home is there to provide a better and quality life to you and your family. And don’t forget, you are not alone and you don’t have to finish everything in a day or two! After all, spring lasts a few months.
